CHEVY
CAMARO
The North Charleston Police Department Traffic Unit
previously utilized two Camaros, one unmarked and one semi
marked. The black unmarked 1998 Chevy Camaro was equipped
with a 5.7 Liter police package engine with multi-fuel
injection ports that gave this vehicle the muscle it
required to get the job done as a police vehicle. The lack
of any police markings or manufacturers markings gave the
car the look of a 6 cylinder. (Smart move on Chevy’s
part) Except for the dual exhaust, it really did not look
like anything special.
This traffic control vehicle was equipped with the
Stalker Dual DSR radar, L.E.D. blue lights front and rear,
and four corner strobes all conspicuously mounted. The
marked Camaro was equally equipped and was nearly identical
with the exception of the exterior markings.
Both units are now no longer in police service. The white
marked unit was deadlined mid 2006 due to high mileage. The
black unmarked was destroyed in a traffic collision having
been struck by an alleged drunk driver while a Traffic Unit
officer was conducting a traffic stop. The alleged drunk
driver struck the rear driver side of the police Camaro
which in turn caused the Camaro to strike the car which the
officer had pulled over.
